Friendly Native Americans like Squanto helped Pilgrims survive their first winter by teaching them to fish and plant corn. Samoset introduced the Pilgrims to Massasoit, the Wampanoag leader. The Pilgrims and Indians signed a peace treaty promising to protect each other if they were attacked. In the fall of 1621, the first Thanksgiving was celebrated between the colonists and the Native Americans.
